Linux Disk Partitioning (Basis)

/ root partition. It is equivalent to the system drive in Windows. All other directories are attached to this parent directory.
/boot Contains almost everything required for the boot process, stores data that is used before the kernel begins executing user programs.
/usr Place for all of the program files (similar to c:\program files in Windows)
/home Users home directories ( similar to c:\documents and settings)
/var system/events logs place
/tmp temporary files
/Swap Virtual memory

The /boot partition can not be created on a Logical Volume Management( VLM) partition.
